The popularity of the JZ engine

Posted by

Built as a replacement for the M-series engines, the JZ engine family was offered as a 2.5 or a 3.0 litre version. Code-named 1JZ and 2JZ respectively, both version were offered as naturally aspirated or twin turbocharged. It's the latter with captured the hearts of nearly every car lover and enthusiast out there.

Most famously know for their use in the Toyota Supra, becoming most popular from movies like the Fast and Furious franchise, the engine's price skyrocketed in recent years. It's not just fame however, as these engines are most known for their reliability and ability to make big power easy and relatively cheap. Although it was initially spec'd with 280-320 horsepower, everyone knew that the engine was capable of more. No one realized how much more however. The factory block is capable of almost 900 horsepower, an insane amount for a factory engine block.

The JZ was used in the Soarer, Chaser, Mark II's and even the Toyota Crown of the time, so sourcing one from Japan is relatively easy. Although designed for their own chassis, the engine became so popular that it has since been swapped into everything, from Nissan Skyline chassis to BMW drift car. It essentially became the go-to place for dragsters looking for big power, and especially for drifters in search for a reliable engine that can handle the constant rev-limiter punishment a drift car places upon its engine.

And then of course, you have the noise. That incredible high pitched smooth sound that only a JZ engine can make. A tuned 2JZ or even a 1JZ is arguably the best automotive noise there is. The addition of a blow off valve only emphasizes this, making the gas pedal and irresistible pleasure. Not to mention it can Throw Flames.

At Furious Customs, you can find all the parts you need to turn that JZ performance engine into a monster. Whether you want just an air intake, or are looking for engine internals and engine upgrades, you're sure to find it here.
