Wheel spacers and what they can do for your car

Wheel spacers are a great thing and they can do wonders for your car if used correctly. While most people seem to think that they're only used by people who like stance for stancing out their car, they couldn't be further from the truth. The fact of the matter is that a performance car can benefit greatly from spacers. Below are some details on how they work, what they do and how to install them.

First of all, it's easy to tell what's their main purpose because the name says it all really. They provide your car with extra space between the wheel and the body. This brings a whole lot of other options however. If your car is wider, it's obviously more stable, but it can also mean that it may be wearing out tires and suspension components faster if not set up correctly. If you're into them just for the aggressive looks, sure go for it, just make sure they're set up as they should be an ensure they don't do more harm then good.

There are three main ways of installing wheel spacers. The first one, which is also the easiest, is to mount them directly to the wheel hub and install them with long lugs that go all the way through. The second option which is more complicated requires you to mount them to the wheel's axle directly with specialized screws. And finally, the last option is to get longer bolts so that you can mount it directly with them, going through the wheel and the spacer.

Perhaps most important, besides mounting them correctly, is to use good quality spacers in the first place. There are lots of cheap alternatives out there, some of which are an accident waiting to happen. Remember this, the wheel spacer is the thing holding the wheel attached to the car when you have wheel spacers. Use good quality products from companies like Ichiba, H&R and Eibach. The material of the spacers is also very important. Although steel is good, ones made from aluminium that are anodized have virtually no way to rust and fail.
