Crankbrothers : a leader in bicycle component design

Posted

Crankbrothers is one of those rare companies that sets the bar higher for others in its industry. They put a modern and forward thinking spin on every product that they release, whether is be a set of carbon fiber wheels, handlebars, seat posts, and even bike pumps.

Not only are the products beautifully designed, but their website is a piece of art as well. Crank Brothers cites their inspiration as coming from top international brands such as Apple, Bang & Olufson, Lego, Mini, and Surfrider. Minimalism, contrasting colors, and functionality is what Crank Brothers is all about and I’m certainly not complaining.

The only Crank Brothers product that is in my personal inventory is this multi-tool pictured above. The rugged yet stylish motif that the company uses is even carried over to their utilitarian products. One of my favorite things about it is the carrying case; it resembles a canteen. The tool comes with all the usual bike necessities such as the hex heads and screwdrivers, but my favorite and most used aspect of the compact hand-held instrument is the chain tool. I have used it countless times while changing the rear gear and subsequently the chain length for my fixed-gear bike.

Check out the “Gutter” backpack designed for the urban rider with a fold down upper flap that prevents water leakage. Heading home from the café with your laptop in your bag? No need to worry about it getting ruined in the rain. I really like the design of the back pack, but I wish it came in more colors.

In my mind, Crank Brothers is best known for their innovation and creative ways of keeping rigidity, strength, design, and lightweight all in key with their wheel sets. Using twinpair steel spokes and a unique way of lacing, along with carbon fiber rims, the wheels a certain aesthetic appeal along with the functionality. Slight differences in the wheel’s design create for a more rigid and light product. For instance, the spokes connect to the rim on small tabs and not to drilled out holes

Here’s their aluminum “Sage” handlebars designed for free ride use. Looks cool, but again, I’d like to see them offered in more colors!

For a company that focuses on mountain bike parts, they are doing well at combining modern, functional design with the rugged nature of the riders.
